Rolleston Junction station
Rolleston
England
A train of mineral wagons passing through Rolleston Junction station behind a Class 4F 0-6-0 working tender-first in the direction of Nottingham. The station was located on the ex-Midland Railway line from Nottingham to Lincoln, opened in 1846, the 'Junction' suffix relating to the fact that the branch line to Southwell and Mansfield diverged here (the branch can be picked out coming in from the right at the end of the platform). Passenger services to Mansfield were an early casualty and were withdrawn in 1929, but a shuttle service to Southwell lasted until 1959. The branch itself was closed to all traffic in 1965-66. Subsequently, the 'Junction' suffix was dropped and the station became plain 'Rolleston'. In this form it was still open in 2015, serving Rolleston village and Southwell Racecourse, the latter being immediately adjacent. The timber buildings seen in this view have, however, been demolished and replaced by simpler shelters, with the station unstaffed.
