Women's Voluntary Service Transport drivers are pictured staffing the ambulance. Five such mobile medical units existed in the borough of Newark during the Second World War, each consisting of an ambulance with four stretchers. In the event of a bombing attack on the town, their job was to transport civilian casualties to Newark's Hawtonville hospital.
